Should I try to get something at every speed if I’m running out of gas at the lower speeds? Say if I only get about 20 reps at 90bpm, should I wait until I can get at least half way (45 rep) before moving to 95 or should I have a lash at it anyway?

    • Jay Fenichel says:

Great question and absolutely YES!!! You should go through the entire chart starting from 60 all the way through 110. You are supposed to run out of gas… then record that number where you fell off at that tempo, on your chart… Then move to the next tempo and see how far you get. It will be less and less each time, but even if that number is “2” …record it. You can stop when you can’t even get 1 time… for example ‘1e&A2’ would be 1 time. If that happens at 105… then you don’t have to bother with 110.

I find that my right arm poops out quicker than my left(right-handed traditional gripper). The forearm muscle on my right arm gets tense very soon after 70bpm. ( the underneath muscle with palm down). Fulcrum issue?

        • Jay Fenichel says:

Not necessarily. Without seeing what you’re doing, I would guess that it’s because your right hand utilizes more muscle groups then the position of your left hand (Traditional). Traditional grip players tend to use a lot more balance and rebound with their left hands to compensate for the lack of muscles being used. Some guys get really good at this over time. With the right hand, all of those muscle groups are in play, and if they haven’t been developed, this could slow you down… especially if your form is good and you are not using tension. This is fine so long as you keep that form solid and work on those week muscle groups. This is where that finger chart really helps… and why I prefer to practice it in a matched, French grip. Again, everybody is different and without seeing you, this is just a guess. I do plan on adding more lessons to go with this chart, that break down ways of isolated the different muscle groups in each hand.

Thanks for the comment. i found that the left hand was using the balance fairly well and I guessed the right hand muscles might be over taxed. I’ve got to work on rebound in the right hand.

  • Glenn Hamilton says:

I’m having trouble with the two hand stretch over my head. Can’t seem to hold on to the stick. Suggestions appreciated.

    • Jay Fenichel says:

I would say just don’t stretch that far. You can stretch to where ever your limits are… If you work on it, it should eventually loosen up. But you don’t have to go over your head if you can’t make it.
